Zona Gail Wooten Houston
Zona Gail Wooten Houston was born January 23, 1937 in Eric, Oklahoma to Bernice Lake and Leonard Henry Wooten. She passed from this life on June 24, 2012, with her family by her side; after battling cancer for several months.
Zona spent her childhood in Eric and Lawton, Oklahoma, before moving to Waurika in 1948; where she resided the remainder of her life. There she met and married her husband JP Houston in 1952. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Debbie and Beverly.
A dedicated employee, she worked for the Waurika Public School System for over forty-two years. There she worked in the Migrant Program and later served as the secretary to the Superintendent until her retirement in 2011. Zona was named Waurika's Grand Marshall for 2011. In addition , she was co-owner of Waurika Auto Service.
She is survived by her longtime friend and companion Jerry Lewis of Waurika, and her daughters - Debbie Dyer and husband Larry of Granbury, Texas and Beverly Duke and husband Jeff of Terral, Oklahoma. Jerry's children- Tammy Harris and husband Monroe of Madill, OK, and Melissa Daniel and husband Brannon of Kingston, OK. Also, one sister, Cleta Prince, of Lincoln, Arkansas, Grandchildren- Misty Bridges Clark, Brandon Bridges, Jason Duke, Megan McCauley, Cole Duke, Chelsea Russell, Walker Russell, Cole Harris, Taylor Freeman, Jodie Freeman, 15 great grandchildren, and her beloved cocker-spaniel, "Toby." She was also survived by a host of friends.
Zona was preceded in death by her parents and husband JP.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 10:00AM at the First Baptist Church in Waurika with Rev. Curtis Plant officiating. Burial will be in the Waurika Cemetery under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home in Waurika. Visitation will be Monday from noon-8PM with family receiving visitors from 6-7PM.
