Ruth Hammons

Ruth Hammons, age 95, passed away on Monday, April 2nd, 2012 at the Oakhills Living Center in Jones, Oklahoma. She was born in Sevierville, Tennessee on October 28, 1916 to J.M. and Dixie Newcomb. She moved with her parents to Oklahoma and settled in Jefferson County shortly after her birth.

Ruth attended schools in Jefferson County and graduated from Zanies High School in 1936. She married Paul B. Hammons on June 20th, 1936 and they opened a grocery business as well as engaged in farming and ranching for several years. In 1952, Ruth and Paul B. purchased the Waurika Sale Barn in which they owned and operated for 30 years. In August of 1953, they moved to Waurika with their three children from Ringling, Oklahoma. Ruth was an accomplished artist and taught art classes for several years. She was an honorary member of Sorosis Club and an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Waurika, Oklahoma. In July of 1998, Ruth began residing in a care center due to her declining health, and moved to the Oakhills Living Center in July of 2009.

She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, two sisters, and a great grandson.

She is survived by her three children, Kay Brezina and husband Charles of Waurika, Fern Montgomery of Norman, and Paul and wife Barbara of Oklahoma City. Grandchildren are Mark Brezina and Jason Brezina of Wichita Falls, Texas, Jeff Brezina of Waurika, Hal Stout, John Stout, and Susan Stout Howard all of Norman, Doug Hammons, David Hammons, and Brian Hammons of Oklahoma City, Elizabeth Hammons Nabavi of Edmond, Brett Hammons of Rhode Island, 16 great children,and two great-great grandchildren. She has one surviving brother, Duane Newcomb and wife Audrey of Noble, one sister-in-law, Bonnie Newcomb of Noble, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Graveside services under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home of Waurika will be held at the Ringling Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 6th. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, 825 North East 13th Street, OKC, OK 73104, Physicians Hospice, 1131 East Britton Road, OKC, OK 73131, and the First United Methodist Church of Waurika.
