Melvin Lee Sleepy Miller was born August 7, 1926 ,in the old ferry house on the Red River, west of Waurika, Oklahoma, to Uriah Conrad Miller and Lora Lorine Doggett Miller. Sleepy passed from this life Saturday, September 25, 2004, in Waurika, Oklahoma, at the age of seventy-eight. Sleepy was a member of the First Christian Church of Waurika. As a child he roamed the hills of Jefferson County, collecting arrowheads, rocks, and fossils. He was also an avid antique coin collector. He owned a toy museum in Waurika at one time. He worked as fleet manager for Champlain Oil. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M as the first voice major granted by the university. He had a beautiful tenor voice. e and Janice Maurine Drake were married November 29, 1950 in Topeka, Kansas.
Survivors include: two daughters, LeeAnn Smith of Anacortes, WA, and Kathryn Ruth Miller of Deming, NM; one brother, Dr. Carl Miller of Redington Shores, FL; one sister, Mary Pauline Miller Jones of Waurika, OK; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, his wife, and one daughter, Lynn Carol McCormick.
A memorial service for Mr. Miller was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday,
October 2, 2004, at the Dudley Funeral Home Chapel in Waurika
with Curtis Plant officiating.
