Lena Mae (Allen) Hughes

Lena Mae Hughes was born Dec. 3, 1921 and went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 22, 2017. She was born in Mt. Vernon, Texas to Ira D. Allen and Alice (Laws) Allen. Lena was next to the last child in a family of two boys and five girls. When she was very young Lena, along with her family, moved near Ryan, Okla. She attended most of her school years at Irving Consolidated School west of Ryan.
When Lena was 17 years old she married J. M. "Buddie" Hughes at the Irving Baptist Church, west of Ryan and they made their home with the Hughes family in the Irving community, where they farmed the Hughes family farm. Lena helped care for Buddie's parents, Mack and Jodie Hughes, until their death. Buddie and Lena continued to operate the farm until Buddie retired.
Lena and Buddie had one child, their son Mack who was born on Christmas Eve in 1946. In the early 1950s Lena started working at a garment factory in Wichita Falls, Texas until 1957 when she started working for the Haggar Slack Factory in Temple, Okla. She worked as a utility operator and later as a trainer until her retirement in 1987. After Lena's retirement she and Buddie continued living on the farm, and then for many years after Buddie's death in 1998 she stayed on the farm. She devoted a lot of time to cooking, sewing and visiting with her twin grandsons. Lena also enjoyed spending time with the Irving Community Women's Club.
Lena devoted a lot of time to her Church, the Irving Baptist Church, where she had been a member for many years. She enjoyed working with the young people, teaching Sunday school and Training Union classes. In later years she served the church both as Song Leader and later as the Adult Sunday School class teacher. After her eyesight began to fail, she lived with Una Harris in Ryan for three years. After suffering a stroke, she moved in with her son's family in Drummond, Okla. Then into Greenbrier Assisted Living Center and later their nursing home in Enid until her death.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and three sisters.
Lena is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mack and Anita of Drummond, OK; Grandsons, Adam Hughes and wife Shelby of Stillwater and Drew Hughes of Ochopee, Florida; one sister, Edith Richardson of Nocona, Texas; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at the Irving Baptist Church in Irving, Oklahoma, with Mike Bates officiating. Burial will be in the Ryan Cemetery under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM at Dudley Funeral Home Chapel in Ryan with the family receiving visitors from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Memorial donations in her honor may be given to the Irving Baptist Church (Rt. 1 Box 32 Ryan, Oklahoma 73565) with the Dudley Funeral Home (414 N. Elm Street, Waurika, Oklahoma 73573) acting as custodian of the donations.
