Laverne Smith was born January 24, 1920, in Hastings, Oklahoma, to William Henry and Betty Rae Churchman Owens. Laverne passed from this life Saturday, December 2, 2006, in Waurika, Oklahoma. She and Curtis Warren Smith were married November 11, 1939, in Hastings, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death December 1, 1991. Laverne worked for Haggar Slacks for eighteen years and eight months. She was a member of the Ferguson Club of Hastings, an active member of the Hastings Sr. Citizens, and a member of the Waurika Church of Christ.

Survivors include: one son - Warren J. Smith of Longmont, CO; four daughters - Ouida Burles of Graham, TX, Patsy Hicks of Socorro, NM, Leah Brecheen of Bethany, OK, and Susan Spake of Wichita Falls, TX; one sister - Peggy McMurtry of Cajon, CA; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services for Mrs. Smith were at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, December 6, 2006, at the Church of Christ in Waurika, Oklahoma, with Noel Curington officiating. Burial was in the Hastings Cemetery under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home of Waurika. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hastings Cemetery Association or the American Cancer Society.
