Mary LaJean Hawkins

Mary LaJean Hawkins, age 74, passed away peacefully at her home in Ryan, OK on Wednesday, February 9, 2011. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home, Waurika, OK. Visitation will be held at the funeral home in Ryan on Friday, February 11, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Services will be held on Saturday, February 12, at 1:00 p.m. at Cross Brand Cowboy Church in Waurika, OK (Fair Barn). Officiants will be Brother Bob Waitman of Cross Brand Cowboy Church, assisted by Rodger Schwenn of Sullivan Village Church of Christ, Lawton, OK.

She was born on January 4, 1937 to Sanford and Vena Mae (Croy) Roark in the Terral, OK Hospital. She went to High School in Irving, OK, and attended Oklahoma University where she played basketball. Afterwards, she married Norman Eugene Phillips and moved to Irving, TX. They were blessed with two girls, Michele and Sherry. She had a career in banking in the DFW metroplex; achieving the title of Operations Officer at the height of her career.

Wayne Hawkins came into her life and they were married on April 10, 1971. Again she was blessed – this time it was a son, Kevin. Wayne and LaJean purchased Mae and Sanford’s ranch, and moved in time to start Kevin as a freshman at the Ryan High School in 1990.

LaJean and Wayne enjoyed square and country dancing, taking care of their cattle, and supporting their treasured grandchildren in sports and life in general. She was a fabulous mother and especially excelled as a grandmother. She is predeceased by her parents, Mae & Sanford; two brothers: James Truman “J. T.” and Dwayne. Surviving are husband, Wayne; two daughters: Michele Beard and husband Mike of Whitewright, TX, Sherry Sparkman and husband Troy of Dorr, Michigan; and son Kevin Hawkins and wife Bridget of Ryan; grandchildren: Mallory Beard; Cardy and Zach Sparkman; Dalton, Kara, Chandler, Ace and Emma Hawkins; great-grandchild Cicely Beard; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

If desired, donations may be made to the Cross Brand Cowboy Church for the purpose of promoting God’s work.
