Gene was born September 29, 1933, in Sugden, Oklahoma, to Carey and Eugie Elkins. He graduated from Waurika High School in 1952. A highlight of his Waurika school days was getting to play on the 1951 State Champion's football team. In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country for 4 years. On October 18, 1957, he married the love of his life, Bess Phelps and God blessed them with 2 children, Jim and Lori. He was employed by Koch Oil Company and Halliburton Services as an electrician for 30 years before retiring in 1999.
Gene surrendered his life to his Lord, Jesus Christ, at the age of 25. He always said God took an imperfect man and showed him a perfect Savior. He loved Christ and His church. His wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the focus of his life. His desire was that each would know his Savior and become the person God wanted them to be. He was happy and most blessed when his family was happy and close to the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carey and Eugie Elkins, a brother, Charles Elkins, and sister-in-law, Delores Kennedy Elkins of Oklahoma City.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bess Phelps Elkins, a son, Jim Elkins and wife, Betty, of Waurika, a daughter, Lori Wilsford and husband, Tod, of Moore Oklahoma; grandchildren, Lacey Grantham and husband, Ryan, of Duncan, Blake Biffle and wife, Rachelle, of Comanche, Brett Elkins and wife, Maria, of Duncan and Brittany Elkins of Duncan; great grandchildren, J'cie Bella Provenzano and Rylan Grace Grantham of Duncan, and Kaylie, Ross and Kelsey Autrey of Comanche, Oklahoma; a brother, Wayne and wife, Carla, of Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
