Evelyn Stephens Herron

Evelyn (Stephens) Herron died at her home on February 20, 2010. She was born November 5, 1923, in Dallas, TX, to Reuel W. and Nell (Cook) Stephens. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and then worked for the next five years for the Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas.

On January 17, 1948, she was married to Ray M. Herron in Stillwater, OK. In 1957, they made their home in Waurika. Evelyn was a member of the First United Methodist Church, UMW, teacher of the Berean Sunday School Class, Secretary of Waurika United Fund, Clerk of the Waurika Board of Education, Reporter and Columnist for the Waurika News-Democrat, affectionately known as The Barefoot Philosopher; was employed by Farmers National Bank and Waurika National Bank; member of Delphian Club, Business and Professional Women, and Sorosis Club.

Evelyn is survived by two sons, David Herron and wife, Terrye, of Hastings, and Harold Herron and wife, Gisele, of Wichita Falls, TX, and two daughters, Starr Herron, and Gayle Johnson and husband, Don, all of Waurika; ten grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren; one brother, R.W. Stephens, Jr. and wife, Doris, of Mesquite, TX; and two sisters, Wanell Tresenriter of Garland, TX, and Kaye Unger and husband, Doug, of Silsbee, TX; brother-in-law, George Herron, of Hugo; sister-in-law, Maxine Herron, of Durant; five nephews, ten nieces, many cousins, and friends too abundant to number. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ray.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 2:00PM at the First Baptist Church in Waurika with Rev. Curtis Plant and Dr. Trevor Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Waurika Cemetery under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home in Waurika.
