Doris Marie Clark

Doris Marie Clark was born May 25, 1919 in Grady, Oklahoma to Alfred Jesse and Pearl Beatrice (Stephens) Sowell. She passed from this life after a brief illness on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the Nocona General Hospital. Doris was married to Earl Edward Clark on July 5, 1943 in Waurika, Oklahoma. One child, Furman Ray Clark, was born to them on August 1, 1949. Doris and Earl celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on July 10, 1993.

Doris was a lifetime resident of Jefferson County, living her entire life in Grady and Ryan, Oklahoma. Doris was an active member of the Ryan United Methodist Church until her death.

Doris is survived by her son - Furman Ray Clark and wife Betty of Springtown, Texas, five granddaughters - Morgan Clark of Chickasha, Oklahoma, Shauna Andrews of Bethany, Oklahoma, Stephanie Rogers of Celina, Texas, Susan Lance and husband Mike of Idalou, Texas, and Cinda Sublette of Ft. Worth, Texas, two great-grandsons - Matthew Rogers of Celina, Texas and Benjamin Lance of Idalou, Texas, several nephews, neices, and many great friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband - Earl Cark, parents - Alfred and Pearl Sowell, three sisters - Helen Jean Sowell, Mary Beth Savage, and Ruth Janice Hanson.

Doris worked in sales for Brown Brothers Department Store of Ryan, Oklahoma, in factories in sewing various items and for the Ryan Public Schools receiving a 15 year service award.

Doris held many offices throughout the years in the Ryan United Methodist Church and at the present is serving as treasurer of the Retired Educators of Jefferson County and an active member of the Ryan High School Class Reunion Committee. Doris was always involved in many community events providing cakes and punch for everyone and dishes for funeral and church dinners. Doris was recognized in 1993 with the Frances Jones Memorial Award given for outstanding community service.

Doris loved crocheting afghans and made them for all of her granddaughters and daughter-in-law. After this acitivity she began making flannel baby blankets and crocheting countless baby blankets for babies in the Neonatal Unit of the Texas Health Resources Hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Doris became concerned at 90 years of age, about doing her part to help save the planet, and began saving all kinds of recycling items.

Doris always had a smile for others and loved laughing and enjoying the company of friends and family.

Funeral Service for Doris will be Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Ryan, Oklahoma with Debbie Kerr officiating. Burial will be at the Ryan Cemetery under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM and Wednesday from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM with the family receiving visitors from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Dudley Funeral Home in Ryan, OK. Memorials may be made to the Ryan United Methodist Church.
