Billie Joe Bill Griffin

Billie Joe (Bill) Griffin passed from this life at the Jefferson County Hospital in Waurika, Oklahoma on May 14, 2013, at the age of eighty-four. He was born October 10, 1928, in Temple, Oklahoma, to Bill and Allene Proctor Griffin.

Bill graduated from Waurika High School and attended Cameron Jr. College, Oklahoma A&M, and graduated from Central State in 1951. He was a teacher and coached football and basketball, beginning at Velma as the football, track & basketball coach, and history teacher. He also drove for United Transport hauling new GM cars all over the USA. He was a loyal member of the Teamsters Union. Bill was a member of the Cameron Aggies Junior College Champion football team that played in the National Jr College Championship game in the 1946 Rose Bowl. Bill was also recognized by his alma mater (Central State University) in 2006 and presented at halftime as an honored member of the Broncho 49/50 and 50/51 conference champion teams. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves. Bill was especially proud of his US Navy Reserve time, his son's service in US Navy, and especially his grandson Travis' 2 tours in Iraq with US Marines. Anyone who knew Bill recognized his passion and knowledge of sports, especially the teams from Waurika High School and Oklahoma State University. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Waurika and loved all the members of his church family, and especially thankful of his Christian growth from Brother Jeff McClemore, Brothers in Christ Ervin Nunley, Ron Morgan, Drew Robertson, and James Griffin.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son Gregg and his wife Flordeliz of Springfield, MO, his daughter Michelle Mudd of Richardson, TX, and his stepson Mike Kirtman of Noble, OK, grandchildren - Travis Griffin, Erin Griffin, Christopher Mudd, and Allison Mudd, and great grandchildren - Violet and Scarlett Griffin.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Waurika with Jeff McLemore officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
